Even if you agree with the Republicans’ approach toward smaller government, you still can’t defend voting R because unfortunately they don’t know where to spend the pot or how to distribute it. Sure, let’s reduce useless agencies but I really don’t want my tax dollars going into defense unless the same amount goes toward public education, dollar for dollar.
Obviously that’s not realistic or even idealistic. Its imaginical.
sorry to make you my straw (wo)man, but this argument is tiresome. There are so many instances of the “why are you complaining about us doing x when you did some other moral equivalent of x when you were in charge?” argument. First of all, the Democrats have been and always will be supportive of a great big fuck-off military. This is sane, because if you want to continue using 8x the amount of natural resources and remain 100x as wealthy as the next person, you’d better have a gun to make sure they don’t try and stand up for themselves.
That said, just because Obama’s spending a shitload of money on education instead of, say, an imperial adventure, doesn’t mean spending a shitload of money is now okay. It’s not. We’re going deeply into debt, and when we’re paying usury to the Chinese in 20 years I doubt we’ll remember or care whether the money was spent on hospitals or guns.
